Dale Appleman lives and works in Washington, DC. Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and group shows in Washington, New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Stamford, featured in several publications and purchased for private and corporate collections. She grew up in New York City and worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art following graduation from Skidmore College with a BA in Art. She has been a publications graphic designer for magazines, corporations, universities and non-profits.
My work lives along a boundary between image and abstraction. I’m drawn to metaphor, the territory that mediates between word and image. Color is the engine —the power & nuance of color is a big part of my need to use paint.
This website represents a spectrum of work over time. While continuing to experiment in color & abstraction, I also mine new & old subjects for possibilities in color, form, composition & association. Recently I’ve been drawn to an Egyptian mastaba, Roman & Renaissance frescoes, oyster mushrooms, a damaged parquet floor & sea glass. They each have something to teach me about how to see & transmute my visual world.
A personal note: Artists should be lucky enough to know writers and art lovers who are interested in their work. Writing about one’s own work is an unwieldy grammatical dive into a translation of the essentially non-verbal. It’s not that it isn’t possible for artists to write well, it’s more that, as Jonathan Safran Foer once said, “A bird is not an ornithologist.”
