Statement
Paint is my medium. Its flexibility offers abundant possibilities: thin translucencies, impastos, overlays-- layering that plays with dimension and depth. I know when an image is mine to translate. Some paintings are simple: I’m drawn to things like the biomorphic curves of overturned canoes, formations left by eroding cliffs near the ocean, lily pods, oyster mushrooms… I’ve had recurrent love affairs with imagery that moves me to think in metaphor. Some of these include boat forms that speak by their placement & proximity to mooring, pairing, launching, departure; tents— as protective enclosures as well as vulnerable shelters; landscape as still life; still life in motion; volcanoes harboring secret plumbing, their eruptions as frozen motion and outbursts of color. I like to mix it up —marry the objective and subjective, invite a conversation between figuration and abstraction.
And always: color is my painting’s engine— its nuance & emotion in 2 dimensions.
